Winter in Mallnitz is not only known for its breathtaking nature and the many possibilities for a winter vacation, but also for its deep-rooted traditions. A special highlight is the Perchtenmania – a spectacular event that brings the old customs of the Krampus and Perchten to life in an impressive way.

Krampus run in Mallnitz - an experience full of mysticism

The Krampus parade is the highlight of Perchtenmania. With terrifying masks and elaborately designed costumes, the Krampuses parade through the streets of Mallnitz town center. The traditional spectacle is not only an experience for locals and guests, but also attracts numerous visitors every year who want to experience this ancient custom up close.

The next Krampus run as part of the Perchtenmania takes place today on Friday, December 27, 2024 . The spectacle starts at 19:30 in the center of Mallnitz (attention road closure with detour from 18:00 for motor vehicles) and offers visitors the opportunity to marvel at the impressive figures and their rituals.

Unique atmosphere: The mixture of customs, music and fire creates a magical atmosphere.

Arrive in good time: It can get particularly crowded in the evening – plan enough time for your arrival. The road through the town center is closed from 18:00 and there are detours.
Dress warmly: The event takes place outdoors, so remember to wear warm clothing. It may also be an advantage to wear ski underwear for other reasons.

Impressions - a look back at 2023

On Saturday, July 29, 2023, the 18th National Park Festival kicked off at 11:45 am at theMallnitz-Obervellach InterCity train station with the presentation of the Destination Nature National Park locomotive.

Numerous guests of honor from near and far are expected at the presentation of the Destination Nature National Park locomotive at 11:45 a.m. (according to the timetable) at the barrier-free InterCity stationMallnitz-Obervellach .

At 13:00, the ceremony begins in the town center with a concert by the Mallnitz traditional band.

The entire mountaineering village of Mallnitz will be converted into a pedestrian zone – offering plenty of space to celebrate. Numerous clubs and restaurateurs provide a wide range of offers and good entertainment with their stands.

The Ankogler, Hüttenkogler and Palfnmusi folk dance groups wander through the village and delight visitors with their musical and cultural performances.

The Biertisch-Musi from Bavaria plays from 18:00 at the village square and DJ Lukas heats things up again at 21:30.

There is also plenty on offer for our little ones: Handicrafts with Tumpfi, pony riding, llama hiking with the Tauernlamas.

Come to the 18th National Park Festival if you are not already on vacation in Mallnitz and experience the tradition in the mountaineering village – also an excellent idea your climate ticket and visit one or two Kärnten Card destinations in Mallnitz. There is a large parking lot at the train station and the Bachpromenade is an idyllic path to the center of Mallnitz, ~1 km away.

Baking bread at the Stockmühlen in Mallnitz

In summer 2023, every Friday from 10:00 a.m. at the Stockmühlen in Mallnitz, the master baker Kniesek Alexander personally bakes bread. Stock mill bread, spelt bread, spelt cookies and pizza sticks are baked, drinks and conviviality are provided. If you are interested, there will also be a demonstration of how flour is milled in one of the renovated mills (from 13:00 or by appointment). Hermann Unterrainer and his team have spent many hours creating this wonderful place with a lot of love and expertise.

On July 7, August 18 and September 22, 2023, there will be tasty smoked trout on top.

The stock mills (also known as horizontal wheel water mills) are a piece of Alpine culture and can be visited here in Mallnitz.

An alpine herb garden was also created here by the Hohe Tauern National Park

and

on Monday at 09:00 a.m. the Alpine Pearls Yoga program takes place here.
