From Graz directly to the Hohe Tauern National Park

There are connections that change more than just travel times. The new Koralm Railway brings Graz and Carinthia closer together – making Mallnitz in the Hohe Tauern National Park even easier to reach for guests from Styria. Those who board the train in Graz today arrive in the south significantly more relaxed: no traffic jams, no searching for parking, and without the feeling of losing energy during the journey.

For many who have known Mallnitz for years, this feels like a small revolution. For everyone visiting us for the first time, it might be exactly the right moment: a mountain holiday that begins the moment you start your journey.

Why Mallnitz is now even closer to Graz

With the opening of the Koralm Railway, a new rail link between Styria and Carinthia has been created. Graz and Klagenfurt are now connected in a significantly shorter time – and the onward journey towards Mallnitz-Obervellach is also becoming more attractive.

Mallnitz is located directly on the Tauern Railway. The Mallnitz-Obervellach station is therefore not just “nearby,” but a genuine arrival point for a holiday in the Hohe Tauern National Park. That is exactly what makes the difference: those who come by train don’t get off at the edge of a motorway, but in the middle of an alpine landscape where the holiday feeling starts immediately.

Arriving without a car: station shuttle included

As an Alpine Pearls host, we at Apartments Hohenberger know how important mobility is on holiday. Especially when you consciously choose to travel by train.

That is why we are happy to arrange the Alpine Pearls station shuttle for our guests. You arrive at Mallnitz-Obervellach station – and are brought to your accommodation free of charge. No searching, no lugging bags, no organizational break between travel and vacation.

Those arriving by car are, of course, also welcome: there are plenty of parking spaces available directly at the house. But our goal is clear: even without a car, a holiday in Mallnitz should feel complete, free, and uncomplicated.

Mobile on site: bicycles at the house

For short trips during your holiday, you often don’t need a car. A quick shop in town, a short ride towards Lake Stappitz, a trip to the bakery – that is exactly what the bicycles at the house at Apartments Hohenberger are for.

Our guests can use the bikes easily, following the principle: first come, first served. For many routes in Mallnitz, this is perfectly sufficient. And once you have experienced how pleasant it is to cycle to the shops in the fresh morning air, you quickly understand why soft mobility doesn’t mean sacrifice, but freedom.

Another connection between Graz and Mallnitz

Arthur von Schmid Haus at Lake Dösen

The Arthur-von-Schmid-Haus is located in the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park (Carinthia).

The ÖAV Graz Section acquired a plot of land at Lake Dösen in 1905, where the mountain hut was built in 1910/11 and inaugurated on July 9, 1911. This hut construction was made possible by a generous inheritance from the director of the Graz Commercial Academy, A. v. Schmid.

Currently, there are 8 direct connections per day without changing trains from Graz Hbf to Mallnitz-Obervellach and the travel time is approximately 2 hours 10 minutes.

All these are good arguments for a holiday at Apartments Hohenberger in the mountaineering village of Mallnitz in the Hohe Tauern National Park

11th Hut Singing Festival in Mallnitz

On Saturday, July 11, 2026 (please note bad weather advisory), the MGV Mallnitz 1914 invites you once again to the well-known Mallnitz Hut Singing Festival. The event starts at 10:30 AM at Mallnitz Village Square – and afterwards, there will be singing, hiking, driving, stopping for refreshments, and cozy get-togethers in and around Mallnitz.

The Hut Singing Festival beautifully combines what defines Carinthian coziness: music, community, alpine huts, nature, and relaxed movement through the valleys of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

One village square, two valleys, three huts, and four choirs

Under the motto “one village square, two valleys, three huts, and four choirs”, the singers will be performing at several locations. Singing will take place at the Village Square, the Stockerhütte, the Raineralm, and the Schwussnerhütte.

Featuring:

The MGV Mallnitz 1914
The guest choirs
The hut hosts

This creates a pleasant musical day where you not only hear Mallnitz but also experience it: outdoors, in motion, amidst the mountains.

Car-free travel to the huts

It is particularly wonderful that the Hut Singing Festival aligns perfectly with the idea of a car-free holiday in Mallnitz. The Alpine Pearls association in Mallnitz organizes holidays without a private car – and demonstrates how nature-based holidays in the Hohe Tauern National Park are possible with train travel, local mobility, and well-organized transfers.

Events like the Mallnitz Hut Singing Festival show that you don’t always have to get in the car in Mallnitz to experience special holiday moments. The combination of the train station, local transfers, hiking bus, and short distances makes it possible to consciously make your holiday slower, more relaxed, and closer to nature.

For the Hut Singing Festival, there is a day ticket for €15, including hut transfers and a €7 food voucher that can be redeemed at any hut. The guest bus schedule shows connections between the train station, village square, Raineralm, Schwussnerhütte, and Stockerhütte, as well as return options in the afternoon; a ride on certain buses cannot be guaranteed according to the schedule, as choir transports have priority.

Ticket Presale and Bad Weather Advisory

Tickets are available for presale at Raiffeisenbank and the National Park Center.

Important: In case of bad weather, the Hut Singing Festival will be canceled. It is therefore advisable to check current weather information shortly before the event.

Bread Baking at the Mallnitz Stockmühlen – Fresh Wood-Fired Bread for Your Summer Vacation 2026

When the wood-fired oven is lit early Friday morning at the Mallnitz Stockmühlen, that unmistakable aroma soon fills the air: fresh bread, crispy pastries, and a piece of living Mallnitz tradition.

Starting June 19, 2026, bread baking at the Stockmühlen begins again. Every Friday from around 10:00 AM, baking takes place near the Tauernbad – and for many locals and guests, this summer morning has become a regular highlight.

At the heart of it all are the lovingly and authentically restored Mallnitz Stockmühlen and the new wood-fired oven. Led by Hermann Unterrainer, who has tirelessly worked for years to preserve and restore the Stockmühlen, and Alexander, the owner of Bäckerei Kniesek in Mallnitz, this is about more than just baking bread. It shows how much passion, craftsmanship, and community are woven into such special places.

Stockmühlen Flyer Summer 2026

The selection includes Stockmühlen bread, spelt bread, small spelt pastries, and pizza sticks. Visitors can watch the bread baking, enjoy the atmosphere at the Stockmühlen, and take home freshly baked wood-fired bread – or bring it back to their vacation apartment.

For our guests in Mallnitz, this is a wonderful opportunity to combine a leisurely walk, a visit to the Stockmühlen, and a special piece of Mallnitz craftsmanship. Fresh wood-fired bread on the breakfast table or for a snack on the balcony – sometimes that’s all you need.

During the summer, smoked trout is also available on selected days. If you’d like to enjoy this special treat, consider making a reservation, as these regional delicacies are in high demand.

Drinks and a cozy atmosphere are also provided.

On August 18 and September 22, 2023, smoked trout from Rindler Hans will be available

The Mallnitz Stockmühlen beautifully demonstrate how tradition stays alive: not as a museum behind glass, but as a place where people work, bake, share stories, laugh, and spend time together.
