When the upper layers of air are warmer than the lower ones, it’s called an inversion. This mainly occurs in the autumn and winter months. Often, it’s cloudy and cool in the valleys, but sunny and mild on the mountains – typical mountaineering autumn.

Weather divide Hohe Tauern

Mountain ranges act as weather divides or weather borders. The most pronounced weather divide in Austria is the Hohe Tauern, as you can often experience on a trip through the ÖBB Tauernschleuse.

This is particularly advantageous for the snow conditions on the Ankogel:

  • The ski area benefits from an Italian low until the clouds have “emptied out” and
  • The Ankogel ski area is always affected by a low on the north side of the Hohe Tauern.
The Ankogel ski area also benefits from the heavy snowfall on the northern side of the Alps.

Yes, in winter there are several reports; there are the snow reports for the ski areas Ankogel and Mölltal Glacier, the cross-country ski trail report from the municipality of Mallnitz, the report on the toboggan run in the Tauerntal, and the avalanche report from the province of Carinthia for ski tourers.

In the winter of 2025/26, the road to Obervellach was closed once due to the heavy snowfall. Snow chains are often required here. The snow removal services of the province of Carinthia and the municipality of Mallnitz are very well organized and restore accessibility within a very short time. And how beautiful is a winter hike through a freshly snow-covered landscape in winter?

In winter, guests of Apartments Hohenberger have free admission to the Tauernbad Mallnitz and the adventure sauna

The Tauernbad Mallnitz is a good alternative. In summer, KärntenCard holders have free admission, and in winter, our house guests have the Tauernbad and stone pine sauna included.
But there are also other bad-weather programs: BIOS the National Park Center (we are a partner of the Hohe Tauern National Park and admission is free) in Mallnitz, as well as cafés in the village. In light rain, we also recommend the nearby gorges.
